True or False? Carbohydrates are unhealthy and cause weight gain.

Carbohydrates

Surprise! The answer is false. Turns out carbohydrates are very healthy and necessary for performing everyday functions. They support the muscles and brain, making this nutrient vital for your health and survival.

In fact, over half of what you eat during the day should come from "healthy" carbohydrate sources such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and low- or non-fat dairy products. These foods are considered healthy sources of carbohydrates because they provide more fiber, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals than the "not-so-healthy" carbs. Cookies, cakes, pies, and potato chips do not count as healthy carbohydrates. Sorry – white rice, white bread and white pasta don’t count, either. Carbohydrates eaten in excess will cause weight gain, but most medical and nutrition experts agree that the long-term safety and effectiveness of low-carb diets has not been proven.
